. . . With Their Business . . .Than It Is To Work On Your Own?

“It is literally true that you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed.” —Napoleon Hill

Let’s face it, we’ve all been in this situation: we’re working on a challenge, problem, or opportunity for our business, and we can’t find a solution, but then we help other people with similar challenges in their business and we have several solutions for them.

Considering that I’m a marketing consultant who people pay to help them, sometimes it can be embarrassing not to have the answer to a marketing question when it’s related to my business.

Why is it that I can find answers to others’ challenges more easily than my own? I’ll be talking to someone about their business and have several solutions for their challenges, but when I’m working on my business, I can’t find a solution.

There have been times when I’m talking to the people who cut my hair and our conversation turns to their business. They are struggling with an issue and—to me—the answer seems simple. We talk it over and they try my suggestions. The next time I’m in for a haircut, they mention that it worked well for them.

Another situation happens when I’m talking with a friend who mentions struggling with an issue. We talk it through, and, between the two of us, we come up with several possible solutions. My friend picks one, tries it, and has success.

I’m not sure why this happens, but I’m going to guess that it’s a case of being too close to the forest to see the trees. In other words, you’re so close to the challenge, and so involved, that you see limited options for a solution—or maybe no solution.

How do you overcome this and solve your challenges?

You have some options.

One solution is to find a confidant with whom to share your problem. You can get together or chat on the phone and as you explain your challenge, the two of you talk about solving the problem.

Another solution is to find or set up a group of people who get together weekly to help each other with their challenges. This suggestion is based on Napoleon Hill’s Mastermind principle, in which a group of people gets together in agreement to come up with solutions that none of the individuals working alone would have even considered.

This approach does work. I’m a part of two of these groups. One is local and meets weekly, and the other is a regional group and meets by phone.

Both groups help me with solutions I never would have considered in many challenges.

Another idea is to write out your challenge as a question and give it to someone else to ask you. Then have them ask you the question and take notes of your answer. You’ll be amazed at the answers you’ll come up with.

These are some ideas you may not have considered. I’ve found all of the above solutions to be helpful; however, there are times when you need more help than the people you know can give you.

In these cases, you may want to consider hiring a professional. These people have many different titles; the most common of which are coach or consultant.

Coaches and consultants have a wide variety of skills. Make sure you pick one to work with who has experience with your particular challenge.
