My parents purchased a grocery store in 1978. We all helped out in the store and it was definitely a family affair.
It was a smaller store compared to the large multi-store competitors in our area. Their advertising budgets were much higher than ours and over the years competing became very difficult.
To make matters worse, the state built a highway that moved people away from our store, not toward it. By this time I had taken over the store from my folks and I was trying to discover what would bring people back to the store.
Local newspaper ads and flyers weren’t attracting the customers like they had previously. We were getting some results from the emails we sent out, but it wasn’t enough.
So I started to wonder…
Could social media be the answer? Facebook was really building momentum and I was curious if Facebook ads would drive customers back to our store.
Whenever we did TV, radio, or newspaper ads, one of their sales reps would ask a few questions and design a campaign for us that matched our goals and budget and implement it for us.
So I applied the same tactics for Facebook Ads. But the problem was, I
couldn’t find anyone who could help! I searched the internet, called the chamber of commerce, asked everyone I knew if there was someone in the area that helped businesses with FB marketing. I found no one. So the only option I had was to learn how to use Facebook myself.
Fortunately, I enjoyed computers and exploring social media, so learning Facebook was a fun adventure with a practical purpose.
I did have to do most of the work after I got my regular work done in the evening, but I was excited to do it. I found an inexpensive course to buy and implemented what was taught. I started getting results. A few months later I was at a conference and a speaker there talked about using Facebook, and at the end of his talk, he offered a training program to help with FB marketing. I bought it, did everything that was taught, and had even more success for the store.
During this time, my sister and I started using Facebook in another industry. We decided to use the FB methods we’d had success with for the grocery store and see if it worked in this business. What do you know, the same tactics worked in this industry in fact even better!
