How To Fail at Anything

Recently I was talking with a client, and we were planning goals for the next 12 months. All was going well, and we agreed on what our goals should be.

When that was done, we started talking about what we were going to do to make sure we reach those goals. After all, when you keep doing the same thing, you’re going to keep getting the same results. While our results weren’t bad, we wanted more.

We started creating our list and before you knew it, we had 8 major initiatives on our list. That’s great, but we don’t have the capacity on our team to get them all done.

We have several options to choose from.

One option is to hire more people, whom we then need to train and coach until they’re up to speed to test our ideas. That will take time.

A second option is to try all of them with our existing team, frustrating them and overworking them so even if they succeed, they feel like they failed.

The third option is to limit the number of initiatives. Get done what we can with our existing team, making sure they feel a sense of accomplishment that comes from a task well done. When that is effective, we can take the extra profits and hire more people.

In years past, I would have chosen to do all of them, and I now believe that is the WAY TO FAIL AT ANYTHING you start.

After all you and your team only have so much capacity and biting off more than you can chew is a recipe for disaster.

All the projects get a little done, but none are totally done and working so you don’t have any feeling of success.

We decided to prioritize and choose the top three initiatives that we know will have the biggest impact on our sales.

When those are fully completed, then we can pick three more.

This way we all have a sense of completion, and we get to see the results of our work. IF we, did it right, these will generate more sales so we have more profit available to hire more people to accomplish our remaining goals faster.

Do You Suffer From Shiny Object Syndrome-I Do!

You probably get a lot of emails. Maybe some from me if you’re on my list and probably also get a lot of emails from others.

Most emails have something you could use and many have items and services you want. You know you could be successful if you just _______.

And let’s not even mention webinars and podcasts…

Or go old school and look at what you get from books…

And then there are live events… Industry or otherwise that you participate in both local and nationally that are full of great information…

You get the idea.

New ideas are coming at you at a rapid pace and many of them look like they could put your business over the top.

How do you choose which ones to pursue and which to let go by?

I know I struggle with this every day.

Here’s a tool I’ve used for a few years now to decide on what I’m going to pursue and what I’m going to let pass by.

Let me tell you a story.

This is you and you’re not happy!

The reason is that what you want is way over here.

And you can’t get there from here.

I don’t know what you want, a new car, more money, more vacations, more health,  to send your kids to a better school, but I know if you’re reading this you want something more than you have now because you took time away from what you were doing to read this.

This canyon is keeping you from what you want.

What is it you need to get from one side to the other?

That’s right, a bridge.

In most of my emails, I talk about Facebook and online marketing or how you can be more successful in your business- which is great.

But here’s the problem, if you only followed me that’s manageable, but when we consume content from videos, webinars, or books or emails from another expert we end up with a bunch of half-built bridges.

And this is what shiny object syndrome looks like.

We have an enormous amount of effort and no gold/results.

What happens is we decide Facebook is for us and it’s going to be the one. And then we start and get halfway.

Then we hear that email marketing is a must and that we can really make more money if we build that out.

And then we hear about YouTube ads and how well they’re doing and how much money people are making from them so there goes another bridge.

Can you see how this can get out of hand?

While all the above are great ideas and any or all of them could be what you need, if you don’t finish even one of them you won’t get to your pot of gold.

Here’s what I want you to take from this message, setting aside any tactic I or anyone else has ever taught you: Pick one bridge and finish it before you start another.

I’m not saying to build only one bridge, I’m saying which one are you going to build first? Decide what that’s going to be today, then you can build the next bridge and the next and before long you can go all the way across, and you can get your pot of gold.

But wait…

We know from our research in marketing alone there are 73 potential bridges that you could be building.

That’s right 73.

Now, do you see why we all suffer from shiny object syndrome?

The 73 items you can be working on are just from marketing. What about operations, staffing, inventory, finance . . .

While I hope you all get value from my emails, if all I give you is another half build bridge, I would be doing you a grave disservice.

So, here’s what I want to offer you today:

I created a 60 to 90 minute experience called the Double Your Sales Discovery Session.

During the session, we map out a plan on how you can double your sales over the next 90 days. What we’re doing in this personalized experience is identifying the one bridge you should build first. The first thing you need to do, not the only thing, but the first thing.
