Create Long Lasting Success

I don’t know about you, but I know that as much as I enjoy a quick easy win in anything that I’m doing, what I like even better is to create long lasting success.

Let me tell you one of the many instances where this preference has served me well.

I need to go back many years, in fact, over 2 decades.

I was in my early 30s and my wife and I had three young children.

My parents lived on the shore of a lake that is great for recreational boating.

We kept our boat at their docks and the only cost we had was that we were responsible for putting in the docks, and taking them out every fall.

Where we live it gets cold, and for those of you down south yes, we do drive on the ice in the winter. It’s not a fairy tale.

The only challenge to the entire set up is that there are 75 steps from the lake to the house.

Now on this particular day, it was cool and we didn’t eat or drink much, so there was a full cooler to carry back up the stairs.

That was my responsibility.

Now, most days that wasn’t too hard as the cooler was usually empty by the time we were leaving the lake.

Not so, this day.

When I got to the top my heart, lungs, and arms were on fire. I felt terrible.

I looked at my children and realized that if I was going to be able to play with them I needed to be more physically active.

Before we had kids my wife and I worked out at the YMCA three to four days a week and were active biking, walking, water skiing, snow skiing and many other activities.

But when kids came, all of that was interrupted.

Well, now it was time to go back.

I hired a trainer and got to work.

A year later, I was in the best shape of my life.

Since then I’ve continued to be active and am in decent shape, and able to enjoy activities with my now adult children.

I made a change in my life over 20 years ago that has led me to where I wanted to be.
